WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS MENTAL ILLNESS IS OFTEN A MISDIAGNOSED OR UNDIAGNOSED PHYSICAL BRAIN INJURY.

The symptoms are real— depression, anxiety, insomnia, and rage, etc.; however, the underlying cause has been misunderstood for decades. Discover the science that proves traumatic brain injury is the hidden and most significant driver of the veteran suicide crisis.

Why Veterans Are Uniquely at Risk

Military service, and most recently the Post-9/11 era, is defined by a relentless operational tempo and unprecedented training intensity.

Service members endure continuous rotations with minimal downtime, meaning their brains never have a chance to recover. The “train as you fight” mentality exposed them to thousands of low-level blasts. Since 2000, nearly 497,000 service members have been diagnosed with TBI, but this number only scratches the surface of undiagnosed low-level blast injuries. Data shows that troops exposed to these repeated blasts have suicide rates twice as high as their non-combat peers.

Each of these exposures, from firing heavy weapons to breaching doors, caused microscopic damage to the brain. Over time, this Repetitive Blast Exposure (RBE) can lead to chronic neuroinflammation, hormonal imbalance, and the breakdown of critical brain structures. The first visible signs of this physical damage are the very symptoms misdiagnosed as PTSD or depression.

The Research is Clear: It's Time to Change the Paradigm

In his new white paper, “Changing the Paradigm,” Michael W. Hartford, a retired Navy Captain and former VA Senior Healthcare Executive, synthesizes decades of research to confirm what we have long argued: suicide prevention is often caused by a biological origin rather than its psychological surface.  This new model offers not only hope but measurable, sustainable change.
